Expecting a Change in the Weather

We are expecting a light frost tonight so we got the garden blankets out of the shed and onto the plants. You can see that some of the grape tomatoes are not covered. We ran out of blankets. Not to worry, we still have plenty that are protected. It's pretty windy outside so we had to anchor the blankets with bricks and logs.


Hopefully the apples can take care of themselves. We had a bumper crop this year - in spite of the squirrels.


I found a packet of pictures and papers this afternoon that I had put together some time ago but never scrapped. This is my daughter-in-law, Yazmin and my granddaughter Celestra. They both came into our family in 2007. Celestra was born in June, Yazzy and David were married in October. David took this picture when they were visiting Heather's family.

Today's Harvest

I tried to pick tomatoes yesterday, but the vines were too thick and a squash vine had woven itself among the tomato vines. Today I went out with a pruner to trim back all the vines so I could get to the tomatoes. I have been watching this squash for some time now. I actually did not plant it. I planted a zucchini. At least that's what the label on the pot said. I think it's a hubbard. I had seen two of these squash (or whatever they are) near the green beans, but when I pulled out some of the vine, I found a couple more. I decided this one was as big as I wanted it to get, so I picked it, along with some tomatoes and peppers.


Terry was in the house and I knew he hadn't seen the squash, so I rapped on the door and was he ever shocked when he saw me standing there with this baby! (Pardon my outfit, I hadn't changed from work except for my garden shoes.)


Twenty pounds! I knew it was big enough.

In My Garden

Look what was waiting for me in my garden today.


This poor tree is suffering from the weight of all the apples. The branches are hanging to the ground. The squirrels come by every day and eat the apples that have fallen.


If I get ambitious, I could do some canning this year.


It's a hot day. The zucchini leaves are wilting. So far, no zucchini. After a thorough search, I found a couple just beginning. I should be giving them away to the neighbors by now!
