Not hairy cantaloupe!

Today's Bountiful Basket looks amazing. Sadly, I haven't been paying much attention to the news lately, but I have been hearing through the grapevine about a freeze in Mexico which has affected the availability and price of produce. For that reason, we are getting some rather exotic items in our baskets. Last week we had Jerusalem Artichokes. I had those growing up - my parents grew them in the garden. But most folks didn't know what they were. Today we have these fun, white coconuts and more mangoes. I just made a batch of salsa with the mangoes and tomatoes, Terry is in the process of removing the coconut meat from the shell. Tedious, but worthwhile. No lettuce last week. Today's lettuce is small, but I'm happy to have it. Notice the tiny, little pears? These are nasty if you eat them green. But once they are ripened to a golden color, they are the best. The strawberries look heavenly. Everything here is on my list of favorites: asparagus, broccoli, potatoes, etc.

Ok, so what do you do with fresh asparagus? I love it, but find it to be tough and stringy when I fix it. I want to try to grill some - maybe I need to hit goodle LOL. Let me know what you do with yours and how it turns out.

I LOVE asparagus - microwave it in a tsp of water/lemon juice drain and top it with a dab of butter. YUM.

Tricia - how fun that you got jerusalem artichokes, they've not been in our boxes yet.

My favorite way to prepare asparagus is to simply steam it - microwave or stove top. But I also love it sauted in olive oil with mushrooms and slivered almonds. Yum!

I just steam my asparagus too with some EVOO and some lemon or lemon pepper and fresh garlic...it gets tringy if you overcook it...we got grapes and strawberries quite cheaply from Costco this week (grapes were $ 1.97 / lb which is cheap compared to our grocery stores who had them for $ 5 a lb-robbers) and they were very delicioso (came from Mexico)...I am waiting for the price hikes though.
